Science

Science at St. Joseph’s College engages students through discussion, practical investigations, research and inquiry tasks. Students at junior levels are introduced to a broad range of scientific fields as outlined in the Victorian Curriculum. During the semester unit they meet real scientists who help them learn to think scientifically, plan investigations, record and analyse data and then communicate their findings. In year 8-10 students choose the stream of science they are most interested in. At senior level, students may specialise in one or more of the core science disciplines (Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics and Psychology) as part of their VCE program.
Students’ learning tasks emphasise the development of skills and knowledge and the ability of students to critically analyse, evaluate, question and contribute to scientific discussion. Skills and content are progressively scaffolded and built upon to reflect individual learning needs. Emphasis is placed on the development of fundamental scientific literacy and numeracy skills throughout all topics across all year levels.
